STITCHED CANVASES

This series of stitched canvases grew from an exploration of drawing with machine embroidery. 3-Dimensional wireframe CAD models – sourced from my architectural training – simultaneously complemented and contrasted the precise line-work of this otherwise traditional and tactile, craft medium.

Guided by a dual fascination with the complexity of the (doughnut shaped) torus, and embroidery’s potential to bend and shape light, I developed techniques to simultaneously render interior and exterior views of 3-Dimensional objects.

Sculptural in their effect when activated by the viewer’s motion, the later works in this series helped give shape to the private commission entitled, “Milky Way” – a large-scale textile mural that lives and breathes within the light of its architectural surroundings.
